MARRICKVILLE NSW 2204

Amongst the newly gentrified inner west suburbs is Marrickville, a small village 7 kilometres from the centre of Sydney. The area is one that is experiencing change, and is earning its wings as an artistic cultural hub. Recent press has called it the “new Paddington”, which might surprise those who are only familiar with its earlier history.

The area has plenty of venues featuring independent acts, and is the main site of the Sydney Fringe Festival. Most notably there’s the Factory Theatre, however there are other smaller venues around like the Red Rattler or the Sidetrack theatre. Some of the art and performances can be (as well as entertaining) experimental and thought provoking; so if you’re comfortable hanging out with edgy thinkers you will be in good company.

The area is also loaded with cafes and restaurants, and is surrounded by Petersham, Stanmore, Enmore and Newtown, all within walking distance and each of which has its own array of cafes and restaurants to sample.

The restaurants, theatres and bars obviously bring somewhat of a night life to the area, but the day activities are also many and varied, including the Sunday markets held at the local community centre. There is also a local tennis club, a golf club, and a croquet club (if that tickles your fancy). There are multiple parks around, and to the south towards Tempe some of these (such as Warren Park) are situated along the water network that snakes through the area.

Marrickville has been home to many Greek immigrants and the residual culture reflects this history.

Nowadays there is a mixed bag of diversity in the area, with a particular emphasis of late from the Vietnamese and Lebanese communities. In a way its hard to pin down anyone predominant cultural or ethnic feeling in the area.

 Demographics

Of all residents, around 53% are Australian born, while other significant results include those who were born in Vietnam at around 6%, and those who were born in Greece 5%. The median/average age of the Marrickville population is 37 years.

Because of its proximity to the city it is not hard to understand that around a third of all residents are professionals as well as a large group of administrative workers, with other significant occupations represented in the area being trades persons and technicians.

Households and Property

There is a strong rental market in the area with about 40% of homes being rented, with around 1/4 of homes are completely owned by inhabitants and the remainder being occupied subject to mortgages. Median rent is around $340 per week.

In terms of household make-ups you are likely to find a blend of students and share houses, family homes, and young professional or city commuting families

Transport

Marrickville is fortunate enough to be connected to the Sydney train network with Marrickville station, which would likely be the best public transport option. However for those who are travelling to surrounding suburbs or to the city there is also the public bus network, however the density of stops in between Marrickville and the City may make trains preferable for those travelling to the centre of town.
