Eastern Beaches

Eastern beaches including Bondi, Tamarama, Bronte, Coogee, Maroubra For those who need the sand between their toes and the sound of waves rolling in while they eat breakfast, the eastern beaches must come pretty close to utopia: with views of the city and the Pacific Ocean at the same time.

The beaches are the main attraction. There are city slickers, surfers and tanned bodies all in the one place. Be warned that the beaches can be a hot spot for fitness freaks, and watching shirtless and fit runners ‘get their run on’ will make you acutely aware of your own fitness level (whatever that may be). Bondi and Coogee are arguably the most popular beaches.

Surfing types should grab their board, but note that both Bondi and Coogee can be crowded when the weather’s good by surfers and civilians alike. Maroubra on the other hand is probably more ideal for board riders, and is one of Australia’s first national surfing reserves.

The geography of the beach brings good surf conditions, but for the same reason it can be more hazardous for amateur swimmers, so (as always) its important to pay attention local surf life savers.  The area is blessed with natural coastal walks that are popular on weekends, and take walkers along the waterfronts and up cliff faces. Pretty spectacular.

During the day the surf lifestyle is folded into the mood of the area with surf shops and plenty of restaurants, cafes and bars that utilise outdoor areas to take advantage of the coastal air.

As for the nightlife in the area, there are plenty of bars up and down the coast which are good for evenings and afternoon sessions.

Demographics
The is popular with foreigners (particularly backpackers); census data suggests that 7% of all residents in Bondi are UK citizens. The median age of residents across the area is 33-34 years which is around 4% below the national average. Close to 40% of workers in the area are professionals, many of whom are likely to work in the Sydney CBD.

Households and property
Over half of all homes in Bondi and Coogee are rented, with 41% in Maroubra.  In terms of the make up of households, over 50% of residents in Bondi and Coogee have never married, but that statistic is much lower for Maroubra, with more family households. Comparatively, the closer you get to Bondi at the north the more likely you are to meet households of young professionals, and the more expensive property will be.

Transport
The closest train station is at Bondi Junction, which is significantly far outside the eastern beaches area (and not to be confused with Bondi itself). If a car is not an option, there are bus services heading into the centre of the Sydney CBD and Bondi Junction from most of the eastern beach suburbs, as well buses that service the area itself. Toward Maroubra, its more likely you’ll need to catch a bus to Bondi Junction for a connecting service, whether you are connecting to the Sydney trains/buses, or just a connecting bus for an eastern suburb.
