The Biggest Update in flatmate.com’s History

We’ve been quietly building for months, and it’s time to stop being quiet about it.

This is the biggest update we’ve ever shipped. Not “we changed the logo” big. Not “new colour scheme” big. We’re talking a full site rebuild, a faster tech stack under the hood, and a genuinely different way of finding and vetting flatmates. Here’s everything that’s new.

A Complete Site Rebuild

The old flatmate.com has been rebuilt from the ground up. New code stack, faster load times, smoother browsing on mobile. If you’ve used the site before and it felt a bit clunky in places, that’s gone. This wasn’t a lick of paint, it was a full renovation, foundations and all.

ID Verification, Because Trust Shouldn’t Be Optional

This is the one we’re proudest of. flatmate.com now has ID verification built into the platform, so you can actually know who you’re talking to before you hand over a key or move a stranger into your spare room.

Share housing has always run on a weird kind of blind trust. You message someone, you have a vibe about them from a few photos and a bio, and then you’re living with them. We think that’s mad, especially in 2026 when verifying someone’s identity should be as easy as it is for anything else online. Now it is.

In-Message Video Calling

You can now video call a potential flatmate directly through flatmate.com, no need to swap numbers or jump to another app before you’re ready to. See how someone actually talks and carries themselves before you agree to share a bathroom with them. As far as we know, we’re the first share accommodation platform in Australia or New Zealand to build this in natively.

Flatmate Circle: Organise Your Sharehouse

Once you’ve found your flatmates, the hard part isn’t over, it’s just beginning. Who’s paying the internet bill this month? Whose turn is it to bin night? Flatmate Circle is your household’s home base: bill splitting, rent reminders, a shared calendar, group chat, and even an anonymous suggestion box for the stuff that’s awkward to say out loud (you know the one).

Multiple Listings Under One Account

If you manage more than one room or property, you no longer need to juggle separate accounts. Multiple Listings lets you list all your rooms or properties under a single login, with bulk CSV upload if you’ve got a lot to add at once. Built for boarding house operators, agents, and anyone managing more than a spare room.

Make an Offer, With Agreements Built In

Room offers are now a proper structured flow on the platform. Room listers and seekers can make and accept offers directly through flatmate.com, with rental agreements and share house agreements built into the process. Less back and forth over text, more clarity on what’s actually been agreed to.

Why We Built All of This

flatmate.com has been around since 1998. We’ve watched share housing go from “ask your mate’s mate” to a genuine, permanent part of how Australians and Kiwis live. This update is about making that experience as safe, fast, and painless as it should have been all along.

Give it a look, and let us know what you think.
